A Soldiers Play
A Soldier’s Play is a 1944-set murder mystery at a segregated Louisiana Army base, beginning with the killing of Sergeant Vernon C. Waters, a Black officer infamous for his cruelty toward other Black soldiers. Captain Richard Davenport, a Black investigator, is brought in, sparking racial tension within the ranks. Through interviews, Davenport uncovers Waters’ internalized racism and disdain for soldiers he felt reinforced stereotypes. His harsh treatment of Private C.J. Memphis leads to Memphis’s wrongful imprisonment and suicide. In the end, it’s revealed that Waters was murdered not by white soldiers, but by two Black soldiers who saw him as a traitor to his race.
